What Is Help-Portrait?
Help-Portrait is a global photography initiative with a straightforward premise: every December, photographers, hair stylists, and makeup artists come together to give free portraits to people in their communities who couldn't otherwise afford them. Not for a portfolio. Not for publication. The photographs belong entirely to the people in them.
Founded in 2008, the project has expanded to hundreds of cities around the world. The work is exactly as simple as it sounds: find people in need, photograph them, print the images, and deliver them as a gift.
Photographing in the Bayview Neighborhood
The San Francisco edition took place in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood in the city's southeast — one of SF's most tightly-knit communities, and one that has historically received little attention from the professional photography world. Marc photographed community members throughout the event: real people, bringing their best selves to a moment that was entirely theirs. The images capture the particular quality of attention people bring to a camera when they understand the photograph is a gift.

Marc Olivier Le Blanc is a portrait photographer based in San Francisco, working with brands, publications, and organizations including Airbnb, Google, The North Face, and National Geographic. His portrait work spans editorial, commercial, and community projects across the Bay Area.
Free portrait sessions like this one require the same preparation as any commercial shoot: advance coordination with organizers, scouting the space before the day, setting up lighting that can work across many different faces and body types in quick succession. The rhythm of a Help-Portrait event is different from a commercial assignment, but the fundamentals of good portrait photography — finding the person inside the frame — are exactly the same.
