Glassblowing Portraits at Public Glass — San Francisco

Public Glass — SF's Community Arts Studio

Public Glass is one of San Francisco's most distinctive non-profit arts organizations. Built on the idea that glass art should be accessible — not just to professionals and collectors but to anyone curious enough to try — the studio offers classes, social hours, membership options, volunteer programs, and youth education. Their space is simultaneously a working studio and a community hub.

Marc Olivier Le Blanc visited Public Glass to photograph the artists at work: not posed portraits in a neutral space, but people in the middle of making something. Glassblowing mid-process — molten material on a blowpipe, the physical choreography of turning and shaping, heat visible in the air and on the faces of the people working.

Photographing Artists at Work

There is a particular challenge — and reward — to photographing someone completely absorbed in their craft. The subject isn't performing for the camera; they're performing for the material. Glass work amplifies this: the pace is continuous and demanding, there is no pausing mid-gather to adjust a pose, and the light shifts constantly as molten glass glows at different temperatures. It requires the same quick-reading instincts as any editorial portrait session, compressed into faster decisions.
