Event Photography in San Francisco with Senator Scott Wiener

On October 1, 2026, Environment California held a press conference in downtown San Francisco to mark the passage of SB 868, the Plug-and-Play Solar Act, authored by Senator Scott Wiener. Environment California hired me as the event photographer. The bill makes it easier for Californians to install balcony, or plug-in, solar panels. Senator Wiener joined Environment California advocates and coalition partners, including the Environmental Working Group and the Solar Rights Alliance, to celebrate it at the end of the legislative session.

Event Photographer for Nonprofits and Advocacy Groups in San Francisco

A press conference gives a professional photographer only a few minutes. The senator is at the podium briefly, and the images an organization needs afterward have to be made in that window: the elected official with the advocates who worked on the bill, a clear photograph of what the bill is about, and the group together after the announcement. For this event, that meant Senator Wiener with the Environment California team, a balcony solar panel photographed as a product image, and the advocates celebrating the bill’s passage.

Environment California published those photographs the next day in its end-of-session update on the clean energy bills passed in 2026.

My approach is the one I use as an editorial photographer on magazine assignments: work quickly, stay out of the way of the speakers and press, and deliver images that explain the moment without needing a long caption.

Professional Photographer at the State Capitol: California Ocean Day

I have worked with Environment California for the past few years. On May 7, 2024, I photographed California Ocean Day at the State Capitol in Sacramento, where hundreds of students, activists and advocates met with legislators about ocean protection. The day included a press conference on the Capitol lawn with Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, an ocean leaders panel with Fish and Game Commission President Samantha Murray, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Ocean Champion Award, presented by founding director Julie Packard to Assemblymember Dawn Addis.

Coverage like this combines several kinds of work in one day: candid event photographs, quick portraits of speakers and honorees, and detail images that organizations reuse in press releases, newsletters and social media.

Event and Portrait Photography for Organizations in the Bay Area

Most of my work is environmental portraiture. As a portrait photographer and editorial portrait photographer, I photograph executives, tech founders and public figures for publications including the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review and Forbes. As a commercial photographer and corporate photographer, I work with brands, startups and agencies across San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Event coverage draws on both: the speed of editorial work and the finish clients expect from a professional photographer, whether the assignment calls for a lifestyle photographer’s candid approach or a formal portrait of a speaker.

If your organization is planning a press conference, advocacy day, panel or public event in San Francisco, Sacramento or the Bay Area, I’d be glad to talk about coverage. You can see more of my work with public figures in my portrait portfolio.
