On November 2, 2024, French Talent USA brought Marion Cotillard to San Francisco for the second edition of SF French Cinema Days at the Vogue Theater on Sacramento Street. The evening centered on the San Francisco premiere of Little Girl Blue, directed by Mona Achache, followed by a Q&A with Cotillard and Achache. French Talent USA hired me to photograph the night, from the marquee out front to the stage inside, and later the afterparty downtown.
I started my career as a journalist in France before becoming a professional photographer in San Francisco, so an assignment like this one sits close to home: a French actress, a French film, a French cultural organization, and one of the city’s historic neighborhood cinemas.
Celebrity Portrait Photography at the Vogue Theater
Out front, Marion stood under the Vogue’s vertical sign, with her name spelled out on the marquee above. I wanted the portrait to place her in the setting rather than in front of a generic backdrop: the striped suit, the green and violet light spilling from the lobby, the parking sign at the edge of the frame, the dark San Francisco sky. That is the approach I bring to every shoot as a portrait photographer — environmental portraiture that shows a person in the place that defines the moment.
She was warm and personable throughout the evening, which makes all the difference when time with a subject is limited.
Marion Cotillard on Stage: The Little Girl Blue Q&A
Inside, Cotillard and Mona Achache joined the moderator and another panelist on stage, under the theater’s ornate gilded proscenium and velvet curtains. The conditions were classic event conditions: low house light, a bright screen behind the panel, and expressions that change by the second. This is where working as an editorial photographer pays off. I shot wide to show the room and its architecture, then moved in tighter to catch Cotillard mid-answer, microphone in hand.
Shooting a live Q&A as an editorial portrait photographer means treating each frame as a portrait, even when the subject never stops moving.
Afterparty Portraits with Quentin Cotillard in San Francisco
The night continued at an afterparty downtown, where I photographed Marion with her brother, Quentin Cotillard, in front of the French Talent USA and French American Cultural Society backdrop. Quentin lives in the Bay Area, and we know each other through mutual friends, which made for a relaxed, genuinely happy portrait to close the evening.
