Studio Portrait with Maxine Wulf: Female Empowerment Concept | SF Photographer
The most interesting portrait sessions often begin with a simple question: what if we tried something we haven't tried before? This session with actress and model Maxine Wulf started with that question and ended with one of the more conceptually strong images from my studio work.
The Concept: Dressed Among the Undressed
My studio has a set of mannequins I've been wanting to incorporate into a shoot — not as decoration, but as meaningful elements. For this session with Maxine, the concept crystallized around contrast: Maxine, dressed in a formal black suit, standing among nude female mannequins. Instead of the unclothed female form as the subject, the dressed woman becomes the statement.
A Statement on Female Empowerment
The female body is everywhere in media. Its ubiquity has made it, paradoxically, less powerful as an image. What I wanted to capture was female authority — not displayed through the body, but through presence, posture, and the particular clarity of a woman who knows exactly where she stands. Maxine's expression and her fully dressed figure, set against the naked mannequins, communicated that idea more directly than a conventional portrait could.
Shooting at the Mission District Studio
Maxine is an actress, model, and someone I've worked with before — which helped. There's a trust that develops over multiple sessions that allows for more daring creative choices. Makeup artist Monique Ford's work contributed to the precision of the final image. A concept portrait like this depends on execution at every level.
Concept-Driven Portrait Photography in San Francisco
Not every commercial shoot has a straightforward brief, and not every portrait is about showing someone at their most flattering. Sometimes the goal is to create an image with a point of view. That's the kind of photography I find most interesting — and most lasting.
Big thanks to makeup artist Monique Ford for her help on set!
It was a fun shoot and I’m excited to add this portrait to myportfolio.
