Lifestyle Portrait Photography in San Francisco

Emily Beeson — Artist on Divisadero Street, San Francisco

Emily Beeson is a San Francisco-based artist whose work is shaped by what she describes as the meaning of freedom and the inspiration that life brings. That orientation — toward openness, toward finding subject matter in the world as it actually presents itself — comes through in both what she makes and how she carries herself in front of a camera.

As a lifestyle photographer working across San Francisco, I'm drawn to subjects who already have a relationship with their space. Emily brought exactly that. The portrait session grew out of my interest in her work and the location she chose: Big Umbrella Studios on Divisadero Street. The building carries its own creative energy, and that energy shaped every frame.

Big Umbrella Studios — A Lifestyle Photographer's Ideal Location

Big Umbrella Studios is a community arts space in San Francisco's Western Addition, on Divisadero Street — one of the corridors where the city's creative community has concentrated itself for decades. The building houses multiple artists across disciplines, offering affordable studio space and a shared context that makes it more than the sum of its parts.

For a portrait photographer, spaces like this are ideal: the visual environment is already rich, the subject is already in their world, and the job is to find the moments where the person and the place say something together. That's the core of what I do as a professional photographer working with artists, designers, and creative professionals across San Francisco and the Bay Area. Whether I'm working editorially or for a commercial client, the approach is the same — find the environment that tells the truth about the person.

Lifestyle and Artist Portraits Across the Bay Area

I photograph artists, CEOs, tech founders, and creative professionals across San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and the broader Bay Area for editorial and commercial portrait projects. As a commercial photographer working with brands and publications — including Levi's, Airbnb, The North Face, and National Geographic — the artist portrait series is where I return to my own instincts: slower, more observational, built around the subject's world rather than a set.

Emily Beeson's session at Big Umbrella Studios on Divisadero is a strong example of what that looks like in practice. If you're an artist, executive, or brand looking for a lifestyle portrait session at your studio or in your space, [view the portrait portfolio →]
