The return session was built around a specific idea that came out of the first: using Frank's studio and salon showroom on Maiden Lane as the setting, rather than a controlled studio environment. The space had enough visual character to become part of the portrait rather than something it competed with. Frank Ancona is a San Francisco creative whose practice centers on hair and beauty — a field where the visual language of the work and the visual language of the practitioner tend to be deeply linked. His Maiden Lane space reflects both.
The Maiden Lane Salon and Showroom
Maiden Lane is one of San Francisco's more distinctive streets — a pedestrian alley in Union Square that has historically attracted high-end galleries and boutiques. Frank's studio and showroom sits within that context, combining a working salon with a showroom that displays the aesthetic vocabulary of his practice. For an editorial portrait session, the combination was ideal: a space with genuine visual identity, natural and controlled light options, and a subject who understands the relationship between image and presence.
