The Story Behind the Editorial — MALT and West Marin Farms
The Marin Agricultural Land Trust has been protecting family farms and ranchland in Marin County since 1980. The organization works to ensure that the agricultural landscape of West Marin — one of the most productive and ecologically significant farming regions in California — remains in agricultural use rather than being converted to development.
Eating Well Magazine, a national publication focused on food and healthy living, commissioned Marc Olivier Le Blanc to photograph the farms and the people behind MALT's work for a feature editorial. The assignment took Marc across West Marin — from the rangelands near Point Reyes Station to the coast, through farm operations that include organic vegetables, dairy cattle, and specialty crops.
Shooting Across West Marin
West Marin is one of the most photogenic agricultural landscapes in the United States: rolling coastal hills, morning fog burning off by midday, the particular quality of diffused Pacific light that makes even an industrial agricultural structure look painterly. As an editorial and lifestyle photographer working regularly in Northern California, Marc Olivier Le Blanc is drawn to locations where the land itself is a subject.
The MALT editorial required a range of images: portraits of farmers and ranchers on their land, detail shots of produce and livestock, wide landscape frames that established the scale and character of West Marin, and candid documentary images of farming operations in progress. The portraits were shot using a combination of natural light and a single portable strobe where the ambient light required supplementation.
