Carver of The Salon Doré
I recently shot master carver, Adam Thorpe, for SOMA magazine. Currently his work is on exhibit at the Velvet da Vinci and the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. I'm honored to add him to my portrait series.
I shot Thorpe in the Salon Doré, at the Legion of Honor. Thorpe was a part of an 18-month restoration of that room. He worked on everything from the door frame to recreating the console table shown in the pictures.
Originally constructed in 1781, The Salon Doré is one of the finest pieces of French neo-Classical interior architecture. The room was originally used as a place to receive guests. The social elite would sit or stand (depending on your social hierarchy) in a semicircle. It was specifically designed to make people uncomfortable and stage conversation.
It was fun shooting Thorpe, but I will admit the room was intimidating. My assistant and I were watched closely by the museum peeps. Imagine the guard's shock when my assistant moved one of the chairs. Yikes! Luckily, he didn't kick us out. :-)
Nevertheless, this San Francisco Magazine photographer had lot of fun.
