Michael Bondi Metal Artist Portrait for Diablo Magazine | Bay Area Editorial
Here is my latest editorial photos taken for Diablo Magazine. It features Michael Bondi, a metal worker in the east bay. His work combines the artistic tradition of Italian forged-metal work with more contemporary industrial machinery and methods. South Bay Editorial Portrait Photographer He and his co-workers create gorgeous and unique metal pieces, such as stairway railings and metal gates.
It was a great opportunity to meet Michael and learn more about his craft. You can check out his work and learn more about the process on their Facebook page. It's worth checking out!
I’m happy to have these images in my portfolio.
Some of the most compelling editorial portraits happen not in studios or city locations, but in places where real work is being done. Michael Bondi's East Bay metalworking workshop was exactly that kind of place.
Meeting Michael Bondi, Metal Artist
I had the opportunity to shoot Michael Bondi for Diablo Magazine — an East Bay publication that has long covered the creative and professional community of the region with genuine editorial depth. Michael is a metalworker whose practice bridges two worlds: the artistic tradition of Italian forged-metal work, learned through years of study and craft, and contemporary industrial machinery and methods.
Shooting in an East Bay Metalworking Workshop
The workshop itself was the portrait's best asset — fire, metal shavings, industrial equipment, and the particular quality of light that comes through high windows onto a working floor. Environmental portrait photography is about using a space honestly: not cleaning it up, not staging it beyond what it naturally offers, but finding the frame that makes the location as much a subject as the person.
Italian Tradition Meets Industrial Process
Michael and his co-workers create unique metal pieces — stairway railings, gates, architectural details — that carry both artistic intention and structural purpose. That combination of art and utility came through clearly in the session. It was a great opportunity to learn more about a craft that's both ancient and thoroughly contemporary.
Editorial Portraits for Regional Magazines
This assignment for Diablo Magazine is an example of the kind of editorial work I do regularly throughout the Bay Area — character-driven portraits of people doing interesting work, photographed in the environments that define that work.
