San Francisco Portrait Photographer — Mother's Slimy Secret
My Mom's Snail Facial
According to my mother - and an article from her French women's magazine, backed up by Wikipedia - this snail facial acts as an anti-aging skin treatment. I can't say positively that it does the job, but what I can say for certain is that it makes for a unique portrait.
When my mother told me she wanted to give this a try, I knew immediately I had to photograph it. Because really - who thinks to do this kind of stuff? It was a hilarious moment, and I have to applaud her for being so outgoing. It's exactly these corky, spontaneous moments that I feel create the most authenticity and the strongest sense of character in a portrait.
Personal Work and the Portrait Instinct
This photograph was made during a visit to Auvergne - the region of central France where I grew up. No brief, no client, no deadline. Just a camera, my mother, and a snail with apparently excellent skincare properties.
Personal photography is where a photographer's instincts show most clearly. There's nothing to hide behind. The image is either good or it isn't. This one works because the subject is completely unbothered - utterly composed, snail and all - and that composure is what makes it funny and true at the same time. You can't direct that. You can only be ready for it when it happens.
It's corky moments like these that remind me why I love portrait photography. The staged, the controlled, the perfectly lit session has its place - and that work fills most of my portfolio. But the images I come back to most are the ones where something real and slightly absurd happened in front of the camera and I was paying enough attention to catch it.
Portrait Photography in San Francisco - Personal and Commercial
The instinct that made this photograph is the same one that shows up on commercial portrait sessions in San Francisco. Recognizing a real moment, staying ready, and making the image before it disappears - that's the skill, whether the subject is a startup founder in SoMa or a retired schoolteacher in the French countryside with a snail on her face.
