Shooting the City for Brown & Toland Physicians
Last August, Marc had the pleasure of collaborating with Hornall Anderson on an ad campaign for Brown & Toland Physicians — a project that took the work out of the studio and into the neighborhoods of San Francisco and Oakland.
San Francisco is one of the most photographed cities in the world, and one of the most difficult to photograph well for advertising purposes. The fog, the hills, the particular quality of Bay light at different times of day: all of it rewards preparation and punishes improvisation. This campaign called for images that captured the city as a living environment — not a postcard, but a working urban landscape with texture, scale, and real people in it.
Shooting at sunrise turned out to be one of the best decisions of the project. Watching the city wake up from some of its most beautiful neighborhoods was genuinely rejuvenating — and that energy comes through in the images. The locals were already out and moving, which gave the whole shoot a vitality that would have been impossible to fake later in the day.
From Billboard to Final Image
The images were designed for large-format use — transit ads, BART placements, billboards, and digital networks across the Bay Area. That means every technical decision, from lens selection to exposure, had to account for the scale at which the final image would be seen. A detail that reads fine on a laptop screen disappears entirely on a billboard.
Seeing the work go up in print made it all real. Marc's collaborator Dan spotted the images running large in Oakland, near the Grand Lake Theatre — always a good moment when a campaign you worked on shows up big in the world.
