Male Model Portrait Test Shoot at San Francisco Studio | Marc Olivier Le Blanc
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to work with model, Michael, at my studio in the Mission district of San Francisco. He has that rugged handsome look, similar to Sir Sean Connery, except you can see he is very much young at heart (in his eyes). He was a great subject and wonderful to work with! model te Ist shoot san
It was a fairly quick shoot with a few outfit changes. We went from business formal to more casual. For the shoot, I had the help of my photo assistant, Marine Terlizzi.
Model test shoots are one of the most creatively freeing formats in commercial photography. Without a client brief defining every choice, the session becomes a space for experimentation — testing light setups, exploring the subject's range, and building a portfolio that shows what's possible.
What Is a Model Test Shoot?
A model test shoot — or 'test' in industry terms — is a collaborative session between a photographer and a model, designed to build portfolio material for both. For a model, it's a chance to explore different looks and demonstrate range. For a photographer, it's an opportunity to refine technique, try new approaches to light and composition, and create images that may open doors to future commercial work.
Shooting Michael at the Mission District Studio
Michael arrived at my studio in San Francisco's Mission District with the kind of presence that makes a portrait photographer's job straightforward: strong bone structure, natural composure, and a quality the camera responds to immediately. He has that combination of strength and warmth — a rugged confidence that doesn't require performance.
From Business Formal to Casual
We worked through several outfit changes during the session, moving from business formal to relaxed casual. Each register called for a different approach to light and framing — a corporate portrait has different visual logic than a more intimate, personal one. Photo assistant Marine Terlizzi kept the session moving efficiently between setups.
Studio Portrait Photography in San Francisco
My Mission District studio is set up for exactly this kind of work — flexible, adaptable, and ready for everything from commercial campaigns to test shoots. If you're a model looking to develop your portfolio, or a client commissioning commercial portraits, I'd be glad to discuss what we can create together.
I can’t wait to add these portraits to my portfolio.
