A Side Shot at Jack Trux

During a photo shoot for Chairish.com in San Francisco, I couldn't help but turn the camera on William and his co-worker at Jack Trux. The two were furniture movers working at the same location where I was shooting — and as I worked, they worked. But their energy and the way they carried themselves together was too good to ignore.

There's something about people who are genuinely enjoying themselves while working hard that makes for a natural portrait. No direction needed. The side shot happened organically — and it's one of my favorites from the day. While the photos for Chairish turned out great too, I had to share this one. It's a good reminder of how much is happening around a shoot if you stay open to it.

The Portrait You Didn't Plan

Some of the best images from a commercial shoot come from exactly these moments — the ones just outside the frame of the brief. The profile, the side shot, the three-quarter turn: it's one of the oldest compositional moves in portraiture for good reason. It reveals structure and character without the self-consciousness of a direct stare into the lens.
