Editorial Portrait: Carol Reiley — Johns Hopkins Gazette

Carol Reiley — Surgical Roboticist and Entrepreneur

Carol Reiley is one of those people who makes you recalibrate your sense of what is possible. At a young age she had already accumulated an extraordinary range of work: surgical robotics research at Johns Hopkins, where she completed her PhD; co-founding a medical robotics company; writing children's books about robots and technology; and building a public presence as an advocate for women in technology and STEM education.

She was selected by the Johns Hopkins Gazette for a feature profile — the kind of story the Gazette runs when an alumnus has done something worth documenting at length. Marc Olivier Le Blanc photographed Carol in Silicon Valley for the portrait, producing an image that needed to carry the weight of a complex biography in a single frame.

Photographing for the Johns Hopkins Gazette

As an editorial portrait photographer working regularly for university publications — the Gazette, Stanford Magazine, UC Berkeley's Haas magazine, Harvard Business Review — Marc Olivier Le Blanc understands the particular demands of institutional editorial work. The photograph has to carry academic seriousness while reflecting the full personality of the subject.

Carol Reiley is not stiff. The portrait needed to reflect the energy and precision of a person who moves between robotics surgery and children's book illustration without losing the thread. The session was shot in Silicon Valley on location, using available light and a minimal setup.

Note: the publication is the Johns Hopkins Gazette — not "John Hopkins," as it appears in the original post title. A small but meaningful distinction for a publication that has been in print since 1896.
